Ascot United Warriors (AUW) are a team of footballers aged from 18-39 yrs who are affiliated with Special Olympics GB. The Ascot Racecourse Supports community programme is sponsoring the kit this season for the players who have learning disabilities including Autism, Downs Syndrome and Dyspraxia. They travel from as far as Farnham, Camberley, Bracknell and Reading for training every Sunday evening at Ascot United FC.
On 18th May, the team travelled to Benfleet, Essex for a charity Special Olympics Tournament in memory of a young player who sadly passed away a few years ago.
AUW fielded two teams of five players and the competition was fierce! Jack Lumsden was named man of the Tournament due to his punishing regime of needing to play as Goalie in both teams due to the injury of the reserve goalie. Jack played his heart out and saved some amazing shots.
All referees agreed that Ascot United Warriors were worthy champions of the Fair Play Trophy, as they displayed guts, integrity and a “never say die” attitude.
The team played like true Warriors and now have their first piece of silverware which they hope Ascot United can add to their collection for the next year with a photo of the combined winning team!
